no wonder people ask me if I can comb my hair.

When people say they were trained to believe their hair was ugly, this is what they mean.

I love the usage of the word manageable.

Hair relaxing products are catered towards everyone these days.

Yes,  I would put this in the "subtle" racism bin.

about Blue Valentine

You & Me by Penny and the Quarters

Ever since I saw Drive last weekend, I have been on a Ryan Gosling film binge. This makes me giggly and proud because I have been watching him since Young Hercules The MMC, and it never dawned on me to pay attention to him as an actor. It never registered that he was a good actor. Until recently, I couldn't recall in which films I'd seen him.

I have just completed Blue Valentine and I now realize that his utter forgettableness is one of his greatest gifts as an actor. Although I always seem to forget Ryan Gosling, the characters he performs become so familiar. He disappears into them. They are like a childhood friend you once knew long ago. They moved away; you wish you kept in touch.

I whole heartedly recommend the following films, written for you in the order I viewed them:

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Directed by Craig Gillespie
Written by Nancy Oliver

Drive (2011)
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn

The Notebook (2004)
Directed by Nick Cassavetes

Blue Valentine (2010)
Directed by Derek Cianfrance

After watching Blue Valentine, I recommend watching the Charlie Rose interview.

The US is a truly beautiful place. I had the pleasure of going on a beautiful hike while discovering plants.  It made me feel punk as fuck.

It would make perfect sense if the world ended soon.

Earthquakes? Hurricanes? Heartache? Turns out I'm a survivor.

If Popeye had his spinach, I had my mojito.

faaaaahhhshion + muzik.

The following is what I am thinking about for Fall/Winter and what I was listening to while thinking. All images provided by (unless otherwise noted)  Mom's Patterns and So Vintage Patterns, where you can buy beautiful vintage sewing patterns. I'm hoping to find renditions of these in thrift shops.

inspiration

Right now I am out of my mind for Dior's New Look. I know this is about 55 years late, but gawd I love being a lady.

coats + jackets

Anyone who knows me knows I buy a new coat every Fall and Winter. Its the thing you wear the most, so I feel like it has to be in line with your overall look. Looks like I need to get rid of some clothes again :/

Gee Whiz! What a lovely dolman sleeved coat this would be...also the perfect length sleeve for long gloves :)

I am in LOVE with swing coats. This one is nice with its Peter Pan collar.

I already have a vintage rain coat by London Fog that looks almost exactly like this. Found another in this beautiful electric blue---kicking myself now for putting it back.

I like how the long box coat tapers towards the bottom.

These jackets are beautiful for fall and would dress up anything---you can show off your gloves too!

Here is a beautiful swing coat by Bergdorf Goodman on sale at Etsy. The mink collar is removable...such craftmanship, eh? Unfortunately its too big for me.

Here is another I found on Etsy BE-A-UTIFUL! The color!! Again too big :(

skirts + dresses + suits

I just love the straight lines of this style, its so elegant. Can you imagine having matching outerwear for every outfit?

A nice cocktail/business wiggle dress, no?

If I would went corporate, I would wear suits like these everyday.

This is how I would dress on casual Fridays :)

Too live for pencil skirt by Escada found on Etsy. I love the quality and fit of Escada, having nearly worn out my favorite black slacks by them. Droooooling.

Prettiful example of a wiggle dress. Lunch date, stroll in the park, wedding, funeral? Appropriate for all occasions. You can buy this one on Etsy.

slacks

Nothing looks better than a cigarette pant. They are so flattering and comfortable too.

Probably the only way to get away with crazy prints without looking terrible.

Here's a perfect pair in my opinionation, by Ms. Liz Claiborne (who I'm in love with) found on Etsy.

accessories

I am sure by now you have figured out I really want to get  long gloves. Well fitting gloves are sooooo sexy. I mean look at these; found on Etsy.

I have also been oogling these for a year.
I tink dis is my Chwismuss wish Daaaaddy **sparkels eyes, bats lashes**.
Apparently they are called Italian love knot earrings. I don't know the history behind the name, though I would love to go to Italy and find out ;) I think its time for me to start buying real jewelry.

Gold is something worth having if you need to pawn everything off in the middle of an economic depression.

Okay that's all. Hope you enjoyed my fashion fantasy trip. Here's the reality of how to get the New Look fit, also an interesting history of the change in fashion of the New Look era, starting in 1947.

about my Huckleberry friend

Moon River - Louis Armstrong

photos from a riverboat tour down the Schuykill River

fragility, not weak.

somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look will easily unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the hearts of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens;
only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

deliberate heart yearnaches, courtesy of ee cummings, one of my favorite poets. I had this glorious book of poems by him, and it disappeared somewhere along my journey, perhaps like one of Linda's purple plates.

about searching by Roy Ayers.

Beautiful song my the always soulful Roy Ayers on his albulm Ubiquity. Can't wait to see Roy on June 22nd at the Highline Ballroom. Serendipity.

Say butterfly up in the sky
Got a story to say
and I'll tell you why
I'm searching

You see my friend
I need someone
that feels the needs
the same as I
I'm searching

What's right is right
What's wrong is wrong
I'm gonna sing a song
All day long
I'm searching

Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching

Now what went down
I just don't believe
That I just know
I can't conceive
I'm searching

When love is gone
that One believes
that love will come like brand new leaves
I'm searching

And then the day
that I will say
that my soul lives
a truthful way
I'm searching

Said butterfly up in the sky
I got a story to say
And I tell you why
I'm searching

You see my friend
I need someone
Who feels the needs
the same as I
I'm searching

Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching,
Searching, searching, searching

Searching for a right love
Searching for a lifeline
Searching for a new love
Searching for a true sign
Searching for completion
Searching for complete shine
Searching for the true sign
Searching for a new love
Searching for a lifeline
Searching for a right love
Searching for a lifeline

Sibuna!!

I was up late at night, doing the usual video search for houses with hidden passageways and secret rooms, when a video for House of Anubis was suggested by Google.

This show is the most satisfying combination of a trite teen show, orientalist mystic mystery, haunted boarding house terror, and hackneyed romantic comedy. Every time I watch, I am reminded of the campy mystery of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, hormonal comedy of Salute Your Shorts and Hey Dude, superpower inheritance of The Secret World of Alex Mac, and the melodrama of Degrassi.

Thanks Nickelodeon for going back to your roots.

you're caught (out there).

Thank you Kelis for putting words to my frustration:
Yo, yo
Yo, this song, yo
This song is for all the women out there
That been lied to by their men
And I know you all been lied to
Over and over again
This is for y'all
Yo, maybe you didn't break the way you shoulda broke, yo
But I break, knowwhatumsaying, so
This is how it goes, yo
Psss...
Damn
Yo, yo

Last year, Valentine's day
You would spoil me and say
"Babe, I love you, love you (Yo, he's lying) and I swear"
Held you when you were sick, even ... (sucked yo dick)
The whole time I think to myself, this isn't fair

What is this I see (No)
You don't come home to me (Oh, no)
When you don't come home to me (Man)
Can't deal, can't bear

You keep tellin' me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I found her red coat
And you're (Bitch) caught out there

[1] - I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
Ahhhhh...
I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
I hate you so much right now
Ahhhhh...
I hate you so much right now

So sick of your games, I'll set your truck to flames
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/k/kelis-lyrics/caught-out-there-lyrics.html]
And watch it blow up, blow up, (ha-ha-ha) tell me
How you gonna see it now
So far from sincere (I love you)
Fabrications in my ear
Drive me so far up the wall
I come slidin' down

What is this I see (I don't believe this)
You don't come home to me
When you don't come home to me
I can't deal, can't bear (I won't)

You keep tellin' me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I hope you're happy
Since you're caught out there

(Yeah, you've been caught)
Yo', come on
Come on

[Repeat 1]

(She's so)
Raunchy, so vulgar, not me, why the hell her
Look, she dresses (Look at her)
A mess, what do you see (I don't know)
It's not all about cash (Hell, no)
Not how much you flash
How I dress is a reflection of me

What is this I see
You don't come home to me (Uh-uh)
When you don't come home to me
Can't deal, can't bear (Told you I won't)

You keep tellin' me lies
But to your surprise
Look, I got somethin' for y'all
Since you're caught out there

So forgive me, but soon I will post on the following:
